What do you do in a typical working day?    
A typical working day for me really depends on the time of the month or if we are performing a review. Every month I produce and analyse Key Performance indicators, I then communicate these with relevant stakeholders across the business. I perform lots of analysis on the data we receive this includes; projecting how much claims are going to cost the company, how many policies there will be in for the remainder of the year and how much the reinsurance recoveries will be.

How does your role fit into the wider department/company?            
My department are essential to the company as our work determines what reserves the company holds which is the vast majority of the balance sheet.

What do you enjoy most about your job?      
The part of my role I enjoy the most is split between two different areas. I enjoy working on projections and using mathematics to back up my assumptions however one of my favourite things is to present and chair meetings, I currently chair a monthly meeting of my peer group and am often challenged to write and present slides for the International team.

What is the most challenging part of your role?         
I would say the most challenging part of my role is stakeholder management; I get lots of queries regarding the work my team performs from both Italy and Germany and need to respond to these in a timely and professional manner. This is an area where I have improved dramatically since I started my role.

What do you need to be successful in your role?
You need to be comfortable with mathematics and working with different types of software that are essential to the work we perform; these range from basics like Microsoft Excel to more complex software such as ResQ and SAS.

Have you taken any professional qualifications?
I am studying towards my actuarial qualification, fingers crossed I get passes from my April sitting!

What have been your career highlights so far?
I would say I have two career highlights so far; I got an award for excellence specifically for excellence and innovation within my department. I also attended a reserves workshop in Milan with senior members of the reserving team and Direct Line Italy; this gave me exposure to top level discussions and gave me a great insight as to how my work affected the business as a whole.

What are the main benefits of working in your business area?
I would say that the main benefit of working in Corporate Actuarial is that all of your colleagues have been through similar experiences whether it be on the job learning or studying, this means the is a wealth of experience and everyone is always happy to help you.

Why did you choose a career in insurance?
I choose a career in insurance as the industry is one that is always evolving with changing times therefore there is always a new challenge around the corner.
