What we’re looking for:

This is a fantastic opportunity for you, a Software Engineering Manager to join Direct Line Group, a market leading insurer based in Bromley. We’re just 20 mins from Central London!

You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to deliver innovative products that will lead and disrupt the insurance market whilst owning the design, development and test of software solutions across a range of technologies.

What you’ll be doing:

Application Development & Maintenance (AD&M) is part of the wider Technology Services (TS) team, responsible for all infrastructure across the DLG business. The Application Development and Maintenance team is the engineering heart of Technology Services at Direct Line Group.

Some key focuses will be;

  • Be an expert in agile software delivery
  • Line-manage software engineers, supporting them to develop their careers and to improve their technical, agile and soft skills.
  • You will design, develop and test software solutions a multi-disciplinary agile team
  • Work across disciplines (e.g. testing, business analysis, DevOps) and develop skills outside your core specialism
  • Continually improve our products, solutions, tools and processes
  • Understand the total cost of ownership of your solutions (including licenses, support, infrastructure etc.) and innovate to reduce it.
  • Identify and actively handle risks within your solutions.

Essential Skills

  • You will have expert-level proficiency in one of the programming languages like Java, Python.
  • Hands-on experience in designing and developing distributed, microservice-style, cloud native applications using Core Java 8, Spring/Spring Boot, distributed messaging (Kafka, AWS Kinesis), caching (Elastic, Redis), Restful APIs.
  • Strong Knowledge of computer science fundamentals such as algorithms, data structures, object oriented analysis and design.
  • Experience of AWS cloud storage and computing platform (especially S3, Athena, Redshift, Glacier, EMR, EC2).
  • Knowledge of software standard methodologies, like Test-Driven Development (TDD) and Continuous Integration (CI)/Continuous Development (CD) as well as DevOps principles, tools (Docker, Kubernetes, etc.), and the intersection with cloud architecture.
  • Experience of using testing frameworks and tools like JUnit, Mockito, Fitness, Cucumber, etc.

Desirable Skills

  • Exposure to Node.js or other JavaScript frameworks a bonus
  • Familiarity with Jira, Confluence, Git, Jenkins.
