The role

As our Azure Cloud Engineering Lead you’ll be part of the team with responsibility for the design, delivery and operation of our new environment within Azure. We’ll look to you to align and constantly improve the value to DLG in line with our overall technology strategy and direction. As DLG develops and moves forward in achieving our goal of accelerating our cloud first strategy so will this role, and we are looking to develop this role into the future state of managing, continuously improving and supporting  the end state environment through a combination of internal and 3rd party teams..


  • This is a hybrid role and will involve working from home combined with office time in London or two days per week plus any other ad hoc days (we are currently based in Bromley, moving to central London in Summer 2023).

Who you’ll be working with

We are delivering a set of ambitious plans to transform our technology for the future, evolving the systems, platforms and infrastructure that our people use day-to-day. You'll join our Infrastructure Platforms team which sits within our wider ‘Core Technology’ department, reporting into Matthew Ashton (Head of Infrastructure Platforms).

What you’ll be doing:

  • Contribute to the definition of technical strategies, standards & patterns, taking an architectural view with the ability to look at tangible elements within Azure
  • Lead, manage and maintain the technical solution integrity of DLG’s Cloud infrastructure, with an emphasis on the Azure infrastructure including IaaS, SaaS and PaaS environments
  • Support our Head of Infrastructure with the building of a target operating model to support services migrated to Azure
  • Provide technical leadership and support in the Technical Design Authority for Cloud Infrastructure components as well as being an escalation point for technical design issues
  • Lead either directly or indirectly, the Azure engineering and operations team
  • Provide thought leadership and maintain subject matter expertise of the Azure public cloud hosted environment and markets and emerging technology trends relating to public cloud
  • Work with the wider cloud engineering teams to ensure all infrastructure and services are provisioned to agreed security and compliance standards
  • Identify opportunities to reduce total cost of ownership and improve performance as well as input into service management processes such as availability & capacity management.

What you’ll need

  • Technical leadership experience; knowledge of managing senior stakeholders, building credibility, and inspiring others
  • Experience with Azure technologies (AWS would be advantageous), engineering and implementation patterns and architectures
  • Robust technical experience in Cloud/Azure infrastructure design, build and deployment, including networking, connectivity, storage, virtualization and identity
  • Implementation of Azure networking for enterprise organizations
  • Build of hybrid environments to span existing customer networks and Azure
  • Securing, managing and monitoring Azure environments
  • Experience building and deploying resilient Azure cloud architectures
  • Experience of migration and modernization of workloads from on-prem data centres to Azure
  • Well versed in Windows and Linux operating systems and the VMWare hypervisor
  • Experience building and deploying Azure resources using infrastructure as code
  • Experience working with Azure technologies such as virtual machines, blob, queues, tables, Cloud Services, Azure Active Directory, Virtual Networks etc.
