Are you someone who can provide hands-on guidance and wants to empower and inspire the people they work with? As anEngineering Manager, you will manage a small team of engineers and embed engineering practices, building and running some of our applications. You will build confidence and help your team to develop. Using your expertise, you'll help set the standards and methodology within the engineering team, sharing knowledge, training and mentoring others. What you will be doing:

  • Lead a small team of engineers, working with other Engineering Managers and the engineering team to design and ensure standards are met.
  • Oversee the design, build and running of one or more applications that supports our business' vision, purpose, and strategic goals.
  • Be comfortable with giving technical guidance and developing your engineers
  • Help the team on a daily basis
  • Ensure the team use engineering and operational best practices such as continuous automation and blameless post-mortems
  • You will be familiar with several technologies and architecture styles; we use a combination of cloud native bespoke development, Java, JavaScript, Python, and insurance industry packages such as Guidewire. It's important that you really understand software delivery practices and set the bar for your team
  • You will improve work standards within, support the team to build new capabilities and master their craft and provide development and learning opportunities
  • A big part of the role will be to recruit engineers

Reporting to the Engineering Chapter, as an Engineering Manager, you will also:

  • Manage risk, quality and architectural and technical debt to ensure we achieve our promises to customers and are there for them in their hour of need
  • Give advice and convey technical messages to audiences without a technology background
  • Build and maintain operational runbooks, streamlining procedures and ETL jobs, and automating routine tasks
  • Research new technologies and architectural patterns by conducting technical Proof of Concepts and propose improvements to existing platforms and migration from legacy systems
  • Design, build, own and run observability, dashboards and monitoring tooling such as AppDynamics and cloud native solutions like AWS CloudWatch
  • Develop and best practices
  • Work with other subject areas including, functional and non-functional testing, security and operations, to develop and operate and secure solutions
  • Contribute to the product roadmap
