The Role:

You will help prepare Direct Line Group for the future by providing research and analytics on our exposure to catastrophe risk, especially where it relates to climate change.

This a key role within a small Exposure Management team, developing our view of risk around meteorological perils. The role will require a strong passion for and scientific understanding of how climate change is impacting and will impact natural catastrophes, being able to synthesize research and internal data into actionable insights for the business.

The candidate will also run catastrophe and capital modelling software to assist business decision making and support the broader Exposure Management function, including scenario analysis, model development, and production of key risk metrics. A collaborative and pragmatic mindset will be needed to work with internal and external stakeholders from pricing & underwriting, finance, risk management, group actuarial and reinsurance.

What you will be doing:

  • Assist the development of DLGs proactive approach to managing physical climate change risk for the Group, put in place a risk framework and monitoring capabilities to meet current regulatory risk requirements, and be prepared for external reporting requirements.
  • Promote a culture of climate change awareness throughout the organisation by providing updates on current science and what this means for our business and our customers.
  • Review, validate, enhance, and document our approach for quantifying risk to weather-related catastrophe perils such as windstorm, flood, subsidence, and freeze. Work collaboratively with stakeholders to help manage change from any revisions to the view of risk.
  • Provide support and analysis to projects/team such as:

oRun catastrophe and capital modelling software to understand and advise on accumulation risks

oProduce quarterly accumulation reports, highlighting key changes

oAssist with the development of scenario tests and other key risk indicators.

oSupport our climate change agenda through research and development and help with the building of bespoke model components to understand how our business may perform in the future and suggest ways to be more resilient.

  • Plan, manage and deliver specific tasks and projects in a pro-active, timely and accurate manner, providing insights, impacts and recommendations; lead specialised investigations, producing reports and presentations for internal stakeholders.  
  • Identify opportunities for improvements to enable tasks to be performed in a more efficient manner. Challenge current processes appropriately with suggestions as to how these can be refined.
  • Develop yourself and your business, market knowledge and awareness of relevant industry issues, to maximise your personal contribution to the team and identify opportunities to gain additional skills.

Skills we are looking for:

We're looking for someone with knowledge or research experience in climate change who looking to apply it in a pragmatic way to business applications. You'll also need strong programming/scripting skills, ideally in R or Python. SQL experience will be useful.

  • You will be an effective communicator at all levels and be able to demonstrate strong relationship management and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • You will be a strong team player but also be able to use your own initiative and be able to progress work independently.
  • You will have some understanding of catastrophe modelling or be keen to learn.
  • Be able to interact effectively with peers in other areas of DLG to improve knowledge, share and understand impacts of your work across the wider business. Ensure lessons learned are effectively communicated across the team. Liaise regularly with stakeholders to ensure objectives are aligned across functions.
  • Data visualisation skills with tools such as Tableau or Power BI.
  • Understanding how to work with geographic data and how to perform spatial analyses.
