Marketing & Communications

At Direct Line Group, insurance is just the start. Combining decades of industry experience with talented people in every field from data, technology, customer care and auto repair, to HR, finance, and procurement, we’re a customer-obsessed market powerhouse. And we all work together to be brilliant for customers, every single day.

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Head of Media Relations to join our Corporate Affairs team. As Head of Media Relations, you will actively contribute to shaping and delivering the overall media strategy. You’ll be responsible for leading change management communications and messaging, reviewing channels and approach, whilst leading and managing a Media Relations team.

The Media Relations team is responsible for managing Direct Line Group’s reputation, including issues and crisis management. The team develops proactive media handling to promote our business strategy, transformation, engagement within the insurance sector, as well as managing a wide-range of high-profile reactive issues.

Media Relations at Direct Line Group is really unique given our different types of businesses and brands; however the communications strategy is the same: to provide the media with regular, meaningful, and consistent information about activity across the business.

This is a hands-on role where you’ll need to think strategically and execute collaboratively at pace, across a company going through lots of change in 2024 through to 2025 and beyond.

What you’ll be doing:

You will play a crucial role in shaping and maintaining the public perception of DLG and maintaining the Company's response to a wide range of situations - further improving the profile of the business by working with external stakeholders – e.g. journalists and those in public policy.

Reporting to the Director of Corporate Affairs, you’ll devise and deliver all aspects of corporate and financial communications, including media engagement, digital and social media, executive visibility, speeches, and briefings.

  • Working with the business to identify and maximise PR opportunities which support business growth and development through external communications to the media.
  • Supporting and empowering a successful team and enable them to promote key initiatives, customer wins, product innovations, social impact programs, business transformation and brand sponsorship platforms.
  • Developing and delivering a senior leaders visibility programme across DLG.
  • Developing the PR strategy and manage the performance of our PR agency – ensuring we deliver on annual action plans.
  • Implementing and maintaining robust deliverables, including media and social media measurement, and generate quarterly media and social media reports.
  • Writing speeches, briefings, key messages and distil complicated information into creative language and concepts in order to maximise communication opportunities.
  • Developing and delivering strategic communications plans, designed to support DLG’s key business priorities and driving DLG’s reputation as a business that is transforming.

What we’re looking for

  • Track record of successfully managing communications during times of crisis within a complex organisation with experience counselling executives in crisis situations.
  • Experience working in a busy media/press office within a large/complex organisation.
  • Able to communicate information effectively and accurately, verbally or in writing across multiple disciplines.
  • Demonstrable evidence of having taken a strategic approach to communications activity as part of wider strategy to deliver organisational objectives.
  • Strong commercial awareness and creative approach to business storytelling, coupled with the ability to use data to create compelling news angles.
  • Highly curious with experience across a range of organisations and a keen interest in policy and current affairs.
  • Ability to inspire others and build effective teams.
  • Strong reasoning capabilities- creative and lateral thinking, combined with good problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, to build relationships across all levels of the organisation and with external agencies.
