Senior Underwriting Manager (CoE)
Here at Direct Line Group, we are looking for an experienced Underwriting Manager to join us in our Pricing & Underwriting CoE (Centre of Expertise) within Personal Lines.
The Pricing and Underwriting COE’s ambition is to deliver thought leadership to help shape future pricing & underwriting outcomes. We’ll enable squads to deliver by driving strong Chapter outcomes such as effective & efficient governance and control, frameworks to deliver technical standards and robust recruitment and talent management processes.
You’ll provide strong thought leadership to help shape underwriting strategies, working closely with your pricing counterpart, the wider P&U Chapter and key stakeholders across the business to help drive these forward.The COE is integral to the wider success of the P&U Chapter, so you may parachute into squads to providing specialist expertise, unblocking issues, finding solutions and enabling delivery, when needed.
What we are looking for
We are keen to meet enthusiastic, passionate and curious individuals from all sorts of specialisms across underwriting. Key is your desire to ‘T’ shape, developing your expertise but also broadening your wider knowledge to enable you to embrace and deliver lots of different scenarios and challenges.
We are looking for individuals with strong underwriting expertise and a good understanding of pricing and the interaction with underwriting. You’ll have a commercial mentality with the ability to identify risks and opportunities across the squads. We also want you to bring your external marketplace knowledge, customers and knowledge of the competitive landscape to the team.
Please note you will need previous experience in insurance for this role, ideally within personal lines but we would consider other areas of insurance for the right candidate.
What you'll be doing
The role is diverse and includes delivering expert underwriting insight to shape & deliver new products and distribution opportunities. You’ll be called upon to translate the complex legal and regulatory landscape into governance, control and business outcomes that ensure we operate safely. You will drive forward key strategic underwriting activity influencing the wider business to achieve outcomes.
Example activity includes:
Shape thinking on future risks & opportunities, building appropriate pricing and underwriting strategies e.g., for autonomous vehicles
Translate legal & regulatory changes into appropriate pricing and underwriting outcomes.
Drive forward the governance and control environment, providing expert views on regulatory compliance and a pragmatic approach to ensuring we deliver pricing and underwriting change safely
Manage complex referrals
Provide expert underwriting advice on the development of new products and distribution channels
Help develop the P&U Chapter through sharing of insight, expertise, coaching and role modelling
Work with Pricing to support beneficial outcomes across the P&U Chapter
Who you'll be working with
You’ll work in the Pricing and Underwriting CoE but may be allocated out to various interdisciplinary squads, swarming to wherever your skillset is most needed.
You’ll have a chapter lead (people manager) whom you build a relationship with and who supports your personal development. You’ll also be part of the wider P&U Chapter, with town halls of all 200 of you or in smaller focus groups where you'll be sharing knowledge and ideas, thoughts and ways of working.
