What we’re looking for

Are you an expert Risk Control Surveyor, Risk Engineer or Loss Control Surveyor who is looking for the next step in their career?

We are on the hunt for a new people manager for our team of Risk Control Surveyors in NIG whom work across southern England, meeting our customers and helping us assess and reduce their business risk exposures.

Please note this will be a home based role and will require regular travel, to meet your team members and visit underwriting branches across southern England, so you need to be happy driving 3-4 days per week.

It goes without saying that you should be a good team leader and a supportive manager who understands the challenges of leading a team of home based individuals.

  • You’ll have excellent customer facing skills

  • Strong communication and relationship building skills

  • You’ll be improvement focused

Individuals with experience in a similar role or with substantial experience gained as a Risk Control Surveyor (or similar) with strong people management skills will be well-placed for success in this role.

Insurance, Fire, Health and Safety, Risk Management or Engineering qualifications would also be useful (e.g. CII, IfireE, NEBOSH, IOSH, IfireE, IRM. IChemE etc.)

What you’ll be doing

You will manage and coordinate the team to make sure they are efficient and able to perform their risk assessments on clients’ sites thoroughly and in line with the wider underwriting teams' needs. This will include delivering a range of services yourself.

We want you to embed yourself in NIG to gain a good understanding of your team’s impact in the national and regional underwriting strategy. We really believe in the impact of our people and want you to use your knowledge to deliver the best service possible to impact both your team, the wider department and by extension NIG as a brand and DLG as group.

We will be looking to you for expert knowledge in Risk Management, and we want to use your skills to improve our practices and develop Risk Management support and advice services both internally and externally. This can be through training or the development of new policies and procedures.

You will be responsible for ensuring that risk control services are delivered in line with Standard Operating Procedures and NIG audit requirements.

Who you'll be working with

You will be reporting into Duncan Calder, Head of Risk Control and leading a team of 8 direct reports. The team is home-based but we want you to work to create a collaborative team feel, with regular catch-ups and a clear communication line.
